21st-Century Management

Course description

This course looks at what skills are necessary to thrive in our contemporary work landscape and how to apply these skills in day-to-day operations. We’ll identify what 20th-century management approaches are salvageable and, using 21st-century behavioural science research, we’ll determine what proven, evidence-based strategies are available for managerial professional development today. We’ll draw on contemporary case studies from the fields of aerospace, military and manufacturing, as well as looking at leading publicly owned organizations that have successfully transitioned their executive capabilities to welcome work in the 21st century.

With these examples in mind, we’ll explore wide-ranging strategies to respond to management challenges specific to our times. You’ll have the opportunity to apply new managerial skills by working through a series of practical assignments during and between sessions, and there will be time for discussion in the sessions that follow. Leadership styles, attributes, and competencies are not one-size-fits-all, so we’ll explore 21st-century management skill sets in a flexible way that helps you strategically develop your own managerial competencies.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the landscape of our 21st-century workplace and gain a more secure footing in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and often ambiguous environment.

  • Use your self-knowledge to choose, and then use, contemporary tools to personalize your unique management style.
