Innovation

Course description

The Ontario aerospace industry is facing significant competitive challenges today. Innovation, in all its aspects, is a key component of a comprehensive strategy for addressing and meeting these challenges. This course will help managers and professionals learn how to create a workplace that values innovation and provides opportunities for team members to express new ideas. This program expands on many of the key points in the Ontario Aerospace: Blue Skies Ahead course*, and will provide you with a toolkit of proven practices to create an environment that fosters innovation in the workplace and within your team.

The course takes an action learning approach to support leaders in understanding and practicing your role in stimulating innovation. That means you’ll be doing small group exercises where you’ll get to apply concepts to your own work environment. You’ll also have some research and brainstorming work to do between sessions.

*Not a prerequisite.

Learning objectives

  • Analyze the innovations that participants have experienced in their careers and draw lessons on how to create future innovations.

  • Understand the “Medici effect,” meaning the way bringing dissimilar fields together creates innovation, and how to apply it in the workplace.

  • Consider the relevance of the theory of the “innovator’s dilemma” and uncover barriers to innovation in the workplace.

  • Learn the leadership behaviours that inhibit innovation and self-diagnose which ones exist in your organization.

  • Learn the leadership behaviours that stimulate innovation and practice applying them.

Target audience:
Managers and professionals with at least two years of work experience.
