Training for the Technical Trainer

Course description

If you’re a technical trainer, you’re already an above-average performer with specialized technical competencies. You know your job! What you may struggle with is imparting your knowledge to others. This course aims to improve your ability to deliver effective technical training and coaching to team members who are new or in the process of upskilling. In this course, you’ll learn ways to bring your interpersonal competencies up to the same level as your technical competencies so you can provide clear instruction, give valuable feedback and use good listening techniques. As a result, your training experiences will be less frustrating and more successful for everyone involved!

This course uses action learning as the key coaching technique. Content is presented in two modules separated by experiential work on the shop floor. During the learning interval, you’ll be asked to use the process presented in the first module for instructing new trainees and then come back and discuss your results in the second module.

Learning objectives

  • Learn a proven five-step process for how to instruct a new or upskilling employee to perform specific job tasks.

  • Get an overview of adult learning so you can understand why the five-step instruction process for new learners works so well.

  • Learn to use proven interpersonal techniques in working with new or upskilling employees.

  • Find out about bias and how it can shape your assumptions about trainees, and why feed-forward is better than feedback

  • Discover the importance of active listening and the value and benefits of initiating intentional communications.

  • Come out with a plan for how to set up your trainees for success.
